It was another game of milestones at the WFCU Centre this afternoon.

In front of 6,144 fans, two Spitfire rookies recorded their first OHL point while a veteran hit a milestone as the Windsor Spitfires beat the Belleville Bulls 6-1.

Windsor found themselves on the power-play early on and, at 5:17, Greg Nemisz walked into the slot and put a shot past goaltender Philipp Grubauer to make it 1-0 Windsor.  Windsor controlled the play throughout the first, showing how the teams were going in opposite directions this season. Harry Young put a shot from the point past Grubauer at 15:54 to give Windsor the 2-0 lead. Before the period ended, though, Belleville would respond. With three-seconds to go, the puck slid behind goaltender Troy Passingham and was promptly pounded on by Stephen Johnston, cutting the lead to one after one period. Shots on net were 13-5 Windsor.

The second period was more lopsided than the first as the Bulls found themselves in penalty trouble early and often. With Windsor on a two-man power-play, the Spitfires played a bit of tic-tac-toe, eventually finding Taylor Hall at the side of the net. He put home his 16th of the season at 4:32, giving Windsor the 3-1 lead. It took another seven minutes before anyone else found the net. At 11:40, Adam Henrique tipped a point shot past Grubauer and it was 4-1 Windsor. Then, at 15:55, Eric Wellwood put his first of the game home on a wrist-shot from the slot to make it 5-1 Windsor after two. The shots on net in the period were 16-3 Windsor and 29-8 Windsor overall. The Spits would add one more, though, when Wellwood put one high over Grubauer to give Windsor the 6-1 lead. The final shots on net were 39-16 Windsor.

On Wellwood’s first goal, rookie Mitchell Fox recorded his first OHL point, drawing an assist, while rookie Craig Duininck’s assist on Wellwood’s second goal was Duininck’s first OHL point. Nemisz’s assist on Hall’s goal early in the second was his 200th career OHL point.

The win takes the Spitfires to 12-3-0-1 on the year. The loss puts the Bulls at 4-10-1-0 on the season. Windsor is now off until Thursday when the Jesse Blacker, Ben Dubois, and the Owen Sound Attack make their way into the WFCU Centre. Game-time is 7:05 p.m.
